The
Artists
Jack
Gates
Performer, composer, and teacher Jack Gates' versatile, melodically
lyrical playing is heard live, in session work, and on his own recording,
New Geography. I sat Jack down in my shop with three of my guitars
and turned him loose playing his own compositions, recording directly
to CD. These tracks are pretty close to what I heard live. Contact
Jack at 510-527-9374.
Anthony
Weller
Equally conversant with jazz and classical repertoire, Anthony Weller
studied guitar with Rey de la Torre and composition with Julián
Orbón. "Camptown Races" and "Simple Gifts"
are his arrangements. The other performances are entirely improvised.
"Someone to Watch Over Me" is from the duo CD Twenty Fabulous Fingers
with saxophonist Michael Rossi. On "Don't Explain" and "What'll I
Do," Weller and Rossi are joined by singer Jacqueline Chambers. Contact:

Alex
deGrassi

recordings, Alex de Grassi beautifully plays this Brazilian lullaby
on Beyond the Night Sky (EarthBeat! 72537), a Parent's Choice Gold
Award Winner. Information on his recordings, performance dates, and
master classes is at www.degrassi.com.
David
Widelock
David Widelock captures Fats Waller's elegant swinging in his artful
arrangement, part of an upcoming CD release, a solo guitar collection
which follows Giraffes in a Hurry and Monk/Not Monk, two duo recordings
with cellist Matt Brubeck. He can be heard live playing both nylon
and 12 string guitars in the San Francisco Bay area. Recording and
performance information at widelock@earthlink.net
Woody
Harris
Douglas Woodfull-Harris (aka Woody Harris) recorded a series of albums
for the Arhoolie, Kicking Mule, and Arioso labels between 1975-1983.
The two original compositions and the Bach are from the album Show
of Hands, with cellist Margaret Edmonson, who also performs the Brindle
"Ten String Music" with Woody in a live performance that is transferred
and de-noised here from a 20 year old much-played cassette. Woody
now lives in Kassel, Germany, composing, editing, and working for
the music publisher Bärenreiter.
Larry
Lansburgh
Larry Lansburgh's mature technique sensitively renders the coloristic
nuances of Tárrega and the bittersweet humor of Joplin, both
from his recording, Larry Lansburgh: Solo Guitar, available at www.amazon.com.

William
Coulter
While this track shows his articulately supportive ensemble work,
William Coulter brings his classical sense of composition and love
of traditional melody to an impressive body of solo and group recordings
and live performances. The Holst arrangements are from the album Orison,
available, along with many of William's other recordings, from Gourd
Music (831-425-4939, www.gourd.com). Information at www.williamcoulter.com.
